A magical Paris surprise proposal with the Eiffel Tower lit

A magical Paris surprise proposal with the Eiffel Tower lit. So many clients me if they can do their Paris surprise proposal when the lights of the Eiffel Tower are on. Nine times out of ten I say no. Why? Because it stays very light out in Paris after the spring solstice, and on into June it’s light until almost 11:00 pm! So, it’s really not possible. The autumn and winter are another story, however as it gets dark closer to 5:00 pm. As a general rule, I prefer photographing surprise proposals during the day, there is more natural light and I don’t use flash typically for surprise proposals because I have to be discreet and don’t want to look like a Hollywood production.

That said, if you’re coming to Paris in the winter and like the idea of a proposal with the lights of the Eiffel Tower on, I’d love to photograph you! Just be aware that the photos will have less natural light and therefore, more grain (like film) and be shadowy. But shadowy is romantic too.

This surprise proposal turned out to be one of my favorites all year! Brooke and Jonathan, from the United States, had booked a couples photo shoot before dinner in Paris. It was a rainy day, but they were prepared with clear umbrellas and as it turned out, the rain was very light and not a problem at all. In fact, the photos in the rain were quite romantic.

Brooke wore a beautiful pink dress, and was a trooper in the cold weather. Jonathan gave nothing away, but I could see that inside he was bursting with excitement. I photographed them around the Trocadero area, which isn’t possible on a sunny day in the afternoon, as there are way too many tourists. But on this day it was quite alright and we created some beautiful images.

It was getting near sunset, not that we’d see the sunset in the rain, but the light would be getting lower after 5:00 pm and soon thereafter the lights would come on. Brooke knew I wanted to capture the lights and that the timing was never set, as you don’t know the exact time the Eiffel Tower lights will come on (I have to have a conversation with the guy that programs the timer!). We walked across the street and down to the Eiffel Tower riverside, for a super close up view of the Eiffel Tower in an area that’s peaceful and calm.

But, there we were, I asked them to look at the Eiffel Tower for a candid shot and as they did, the lights came on, and Jonathan turned to Brooke. I was in the distance, trying to get the whole landscape in my viewfinder to tell the entire story of this Paris surprise proposal. But I could see from a distance that Brooke was really surprised as Jonathan got down on one knee, and overcome with emotion.

The color rose/pink is Brooke’s favorite, so he presented her with a rose gold engagement ring. It was pure magic!

After the proposal we walked nearby to the bridge of Bir Hakeim, a tricky place to photograph during rush hour, but the patience it takes for photographs here is so worth it! Capturing freshly engaged couples is so fun and so rewarding.

I suggested we end our night going back to the riverside and doing some romantic shadowy photographs in the now dark and I think they’re just beautiful.

The rain had created gorgeous reflections on the cobblestones and it was truly a magical night. I know that’s about the third time I’ve used the word magical, but it’s really true!

You and the one you love deserve memories like this! Check out my surprise proposal packages here, and make your Paris surprise proposal magical too!
