Useful information on how to have a perfect Paris proposal
How to select a Paris surprise proposal photographer
Surprise proposals are my specialty, I’ve done tons of them in Paris and it gives me great joy to be a small part of such a significant moment in two people’s lives! Because I’m a sensitive type, I’m the perfect candidate for your surprise proposal, because I care about it as much as you do. I’ll photograph your moment beautifully so you can remember this moment the rest of your lives.
Before you select a Paris surprise proposal photographer, ask a few questions:
Does this photographer seem reliable? Can I trust them to show up for my big moment? I cannot tell you how many clients have told me that their surprise proposal photographer canceled on them the last minute! Don’t let that happen to you.
Does the photographer have a good body of work in a portfolio that they can show you their distinct style?
How is the photographer with communication? Do they respond promptly to your emails, are they helpful?
Does the photographer seem discreet, and that they will be able to keep your secret?
Does the photographer offer the option to purchase prints, get your images in black and white, and offer expedited service?
Is the photographer polite and professional? How well do they know Paris? How well do they speak English?
Is your photographer classy and dignified? I’ve seen Paris surprise proposal photographers literally scream at tourists to get out of the way of their surprise proposals. I find this unprofessional and never do it myself, which is why I developed many scenarios so I don’t have to scream at tourists to get out of the way, and potentially embarrass you or spoil your special moment.
Does the photographer provide a stress-free, calm, fun and memorable experience?
I care about you as PEOPLE, not a number, and I’ll do everything in my power to ensure your proposal is amazing.
How are you going to keep the people out of our pictures?
How to I keep other people out of your photos? I try very, very hard and 99.99% of the time I’m successful.
Here’s how we do it:
- The Tourist (randomly walk up to me and ask me to take your photo with your cell phone) For a video of how this works, view video here >> https://youtu.be/7rtag8aye6c
- You Hired a Photographer (tell your loved one you’re just doing a photo session to capture your time in Paris
- You Hired a Tour Guide (a tour guide to show you around Paris)
More about the options:
The easiest thing for us to do is meet at a popular spot. This may be at the Eiffel Tower, or another location we will arrange together in advance.
As Paris has a lot of tourists, it’s very believable that I should be at our meeting spot as a tourist taking photos, just like you’ll be. I’ll give you the exact meeting spot and tell you what I look like so you can spot me quickly. Then, you just approach me and ask me to take a picture of you and your significant other with your cell phone. I’ll take your picture, ask you if it’s okay, and then hand your phone back, and from there you can propose. Then, I take images with my professional camera. It’s an easy and very successful way to propose and have your images captured without spoiling the surprise. Your partner will not suspect anything odd, as tourists do this for other tourists all the time. Please note, I give you your phone back, so please take it back and then put it in a safe place before you propose.
Why do I recommend this scenario? It’s a good one because it allows me to establish my “zone” so that people are not walking in front of you, ruining the proposal images.
For example: We meet at the Bir Hakeim bridge, which has a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower. You casually approach me and ask me if I would mind taking your picture. As this happens all day among tourists, it’s nothing out of the ordinary and your significant other will not find it odd. I’ll take your cell phone, and take your couples photo. I will then give the phone back to you, and ask if the photo is ok. From there, you’ll put your phone away, turn to your significant other, say your words, and get down on one knee to propose. During this time, they are paying attention to you, not me. I am capturing everything that is happening with my professional camera. When your proposal is over, I’ll introduce myself and congratulate you!
**IMPORTANT: Many people ask, can’t I just give you a signal, a sign? Why do I have to approach you? She will be suspicious! It will be weird! Actually, it’s not at all weird and works perfectly. Can’t I hide behind a tree with a long lens? I don’t want you anywhere around!
I’m sorry, but this is not the way I work, and I’ll tell you why.
In a perfect world, you could wave your hand, all the people would part, and he’d get down on one knee and have a beautiful view of Paris all to yourself. But it doesn’t work like that. People are in the way, people don’t move. Tourists want to take pictures of the Eiffel Tower too, and they are not thinking about getting out of the way of others. So that means I have to move them if they’re in the way, and the only way I can do that is to create a path so that they move out of the way. I know it sounds invasive and scary to go up to a stranger and ask them to take a photograph, but it happens multiple times a day, and even while I’m waiting there people ask me to take pictures with their cell phone. There has never been one woman who has said, “Why did you ask a stranger to take our picture!” or “I knew you were proposing, you asked that woman to take our picture”.
Paris is just too busy to hide somewhere and hope that I’m in the right spot at the right time. I watched another photographer do this once. What happened? There were five people in front of his couple and he ran up to the people, pushed them hard out of the way, and screamed at them. This was a very ugly scene for the couple and the tourists that were being screamed at, and I decided I’d never do that. My system works perfectly every time.
You Hired a Photographer
Another idea that some clients prefer is to hire a photographer for a photo session to capture your Paris memories. It is Paris photo session, but with a proposal thrown in! You just tell your significant other that you thought it would be nice to have some photos taken together in Paris.
For example: You tell your girlfriend Monica that wouldn’t it be nice to have some nice photos in Paris to remember your vacation by a professional photographer. Monica thinks it’s a great idea and wears her best dress because after your session, you’re going to have a nice lunch or dinner in Paris. We all meet and start our photo session, but during a portion of it, you propose!
The Tour Guide
I’m also a former tour guide, and you might tell your significant other we’re taking a Paris tour, and the tour guide also takes photos. I’ve done this with great success as well (and yes, I’ll really give you a tour!).
For example: You and your significant other want a nice tour of Montmartre. So you hire me as your tour guide to give you a tour and during your tour, you propose. Congratulations!
There are a few locations and situations (Trocadero in the early morning, for example) where I don’t need you to employ any of the above scenarios. Honestly, they work the absolute best, but if you’re concerned about them, don’t hesitate to let me know. The most important thing for me is to capture your proposal beautifully, so I’ll do everything I can to ensure your proposal in Paris is the absolute best.
Photo session duration
Most people book the Classic photo session for a surprise proposal, which is 30 minutes. This is enough time for the proposal and a few photographs post-proposal, but not an engagement session. If you’d like more time for engagement photos after the proposal, or to go to more than one location (i.e Eiffel Tower + another location), please let me know and we can arrange an engagement session. This is also an add-on when you pay for your package.
A word of advice on your loved one’s appearance
There are many things to take into consideration during your surprise proposal. One of the items that you may overlook, is the appearance of your significant other during the proposal. As it is a surprise, you don’t want to create any questions and want to maintain the surprise. On the other hand, there have been many cases where the person behind proposed to (often a female) has expressed dismay and satisfaction that they “didn’t know” they’d be photographed that day, or that they didn’t wear makeup, do their hair, or wear a nice outfit. For many people this is really important, and can detract not only from your proposal but also from the images we take if your significant other is uncomfortable with their appearance. Yes, we want to surprise, but it is more difficult to enjoy the images of this special time of a person feels uncomfortable with the way they look.
So, what can you do? You know your loved one better than anyone. If it’s a morning or late morning proposal, you can tell him or her you booked a special lunch or brunch at the Eiffel Tower and they have a dress code at the restaurant, and both of you will dress up. That way, especially the women, will do their hair and makeup if they wish. If it’s an afternoon or early evening proposal, the same holds true, you can tell your loved one you’ve planned a special dinner to celebrate your time in Paris.
If none of these scenarios work, do your best NOT to give away the surprise, but take the lead. You can say, hey, we’re in Paris, I feel like dressing up! This is quite natural is Paris is a dressy kind of city. They may take your lead. If you think that will totally tip your loved one off, you have to tread with caution. But try to give gentle pointers, as there’s nothing worse for them than being photographed and not feeling or looking their best (even if they’re super happy you proposed!)
Also, if it works best for you to do your proposal one day and an engagement session the next day, the Surprise Proposal + Engagement Package can be split into two days. That way the we still capture the amazing proposal, but your significant other can be prepared for the engagement photos.
I'M ALREADY MARRIED BUT WOULD LIKE TO PROPOSE AGAIN IN PARIS, IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Many couples have been married for some time and maybe it wasn’t the ideal proposal. Maybe you’re buying her a new ring. I also work with couples on “re-proposals”. This means that you’re already married, but you’d like to propose again, this time in Paris, and usually with another ring.
This works the exact same as a Paris surprise proposal for someone not yet married.
I'M A FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBER, CAN I BOOK ON BEHALF OF SOMEONE ELSE?
Wonderful people coming to Paris who want to propose to their loved one, really want to keep it a surprise! But planning can be a bit tricky. That’s when they may call on their family or friends to help arrange the proposal, and this is so nice!
Unfortunately, I really can’t take surprise proposal bookings from friends or family members, because it’s so important that I have that relationship and communication directly with my client.
It’s also important that they see and review my photography, to ensure it’s the very best fit for them.
If you’re a friend or family member of someone coming to Paris who wants to plan a surprise proposal, please have your friend or family member that’s proposing contact me at [email protected] or send me a message on Whatsapp at 33 07 51 42 35 78.
I see the proposals are for just 30 minutes, why is that?
As you’re looking for your perfect Paris surprise proposal photographer, you’ll probably see that many photographers in Paris offer a one-hour surprise proposal package. This seems like a great idea, and a great value, right?
That’s what I thought when I started offering surprise proposal photography services. A good hour to capture the proposal plus a lot of photos afterward.
But guess what, it’s a surprise. That means, even if your signficant other loves photos. I found that the last thing couples really wanted to do was spend a whole hour with me on the morning or evening of the proposal.
Many times the ladies being proposed to felt awkward, stunned, unprepared, of course happy, but many ladies are in a bit of a happy fog afterward. One minute she’s walking the love of her life in Paris, the next minute she’s engaged, and oh, there’s a photographer with a camera?
That’s great, he or she will love that you hired a professional photographer to capture your proposal! But any more than 30 minutes, and I’ve found it causes real anxiety.
I figured out early on that a surprise proposal of much more than 30 minutes gave my clients anxiety. They want to talk, they want to connect, they want to absorb this amazing thing that has just happened, usually somewhat privately, and they sure don’t want me walking them around Paris for an entire hour and photographing them.
That’s why my surprise proposals are just 30 minutes. It’s the perfect amount of time to capture your proposal, with a few celebratory photos afterward and a champagne toast, if you wish. Your loved one is not feeling stressed, they can relax, have fun and before you know it you’ll be on your way to a celebratory dinner or a wonderful day in Paris.
If you or your fiancé(e) love the idea of more photos, why not book an engagement session for an additional hour the next day or day after? That way they can be photo ready and enthusiastic about their engagement session with you in Paris!
Do you offer video too?
As I’m busy with the still photography aspect of your surprise proposal, I cannot also offer video services.
However, there are number of videographers in Paris that will video your surprise proposal.
I can put you in contact with a video person to discuss adding this to your surprise proposal. You would pay the video person separately.
If it’s nothing fancy you need, many clients have set up a GoPro or cell phone on a tripod for selfies (he or she thinks it’s a selfie, but you actually just set the video button). Or if you’re traveling with others, a friend or family member often takes video on a cell phone.
You’ll see examples of my editing style on this site in the gallery and on Instagram (instagram.com/picturemeparis). In general, I edit in a light and colorful way, not too bright, not too dark. But if you were to say one way or the other, I prefer lighter images to dark ones, as Paris is a romantic place and I feel the images should reflect this.
Please ensure my style fits not only with your style but with your signifcant others’ style too. I deliver your beautiful images to your photo gallery in my signature editing style, and do not deviate from this style.

What if it rains?
First, try not to worry about the rain, because it’s not something we can control.
It rains a lot in Paris and is often cloudy. The good news is that the city is beautiful in the rain, it actually shimmers. It’s always a good idea to take an umbrella along with you, especially in the winter. Our proposals are done rain or shine, but I’ll send you more information on weather options. In the meantime, check out the rainy day gallery here, and you can see how beautiful Paris is in the rain. A lot of my clients get really worried about rain, they worry their photos won’t turn out, they worry they may get wet. As it rains so much in Paris, we have to work with the weather or we’d never get out if we never went out in the rain. Instead of fearing the rain, think of it as a romantic Paris adventure, to be able to share an umbrella with the ones you love in the Paris rain, it’s distinctly Parisian. Last winter it rained every single day in Paris. I shot beautiful, romantic surprise proposals of couples in the rain, so don’t fear it, embrace it as a unique opportunity to get close to the one you love.
Your image package
The Picture Me Paris Surprise Proposal package includes 10 images. You may purchase additional images in your gallery à la carte at a rate of 12€ each or purchase the entire gallery for 100€.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE VIOLINIST ADD-ON
Music is the language of love, and having your loved one serenaded by the sweet sounds of a violin is a real treat!
A violinist is an add-on to your surprise proposal, you’ll see the rates when you book your location, as they are subject to change.
After adding on a violinist, you’ll select from a list of songs to choose your three (3) favorites, which will be played during your surprise proposal and just after get up from one knee. You can also request your favorite song.
The violinist is professional and discreet, and will be waiting outside the line of view, your loved one will have no idea the violist is there for them.
Remember, Paris is a city with tons of visitors a year, you see everything in Paris, a man with a violin walking around doesn’t automatically trigger in your loved one’s mind Oh wow, there’s a violinist here, he’s going to propose!
You may be worried, a violin visible will spoil the surprise. No, your loved one won’t realize that the violin is there for you, it doesn’t cross their mind, and in a few minutes, you’ll be on one knee and it will not be a surprise any longer.
In fact, I’ve had cases where the woman is so shocked that she doesn’t even realize there’s a violinist there at all, or that she’s just been proposed to!
The violinist will be in your proposal images, but if you’d prefer them not to be, they can step back, although the music won’t be as easy to hear.
TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CHAMPAGNE ADD-ON
France produces some of the best champagne you can find in the world, and nothing says “Yay, we’re engaged!” better than a champagne toast.
When you book your location, you can add-on a demi-bottle of delicious French champagne, and I’ll serve it to you in two champagne flutes.
A demi-bottle is the perfect size so you aren’t carrying around a big bottle of champagne.
The rate to add-on champagne + two glasses is 75€.
I’d like to do something super special, like hire a mariachi band, start a flash mob, rent a boat, shoot fireworks over the Eiffel Tower. Can you help me plan my big surprise proposal?
Wow, that’s super exciting! However, I’m not able to help with “event” style surprise proposals. I’m a photographer and capture the moment you get down on one knee with one of the beautiful sites of Paris behind you, like the Eiffel Tower or Louvre. I do not help plan special events, like horse-drawn carriages, fireworks shows etc. The proposals I capture are simple, and elegant, with the beauty of Paris behind you, and I capture it for you to treasure forever. If you’re looking to do something elaborate, there are number of companies in Paris that specialize in these types of surprise proposals.
Best time of day for your proposal
After successfully photographing many many Paris surprise proposals (my favorite), I’ve come to the conclusion that morning proposals are the absolute best for several reasons. First off, there’s usually less tourists out and about, so your proposal will be a bit more private. This also means that there will be less people in your images. Win!
You can tell your loved on a variety of things to get them out and about in Paris earlier rather than later. You’re going to a nice lunch, a brunch, or you need to get to the Eiffel Tower early before the tourists get there.
However, evenings are magic too. That way you can tell your significant other you’re going to a nice dinner and they will be all dressed and camera ready, assuming you’re just going to dinner and will have no idea about the surprise proposal! The only place we can’t do surprise proposals in the evening is the Eiffel Tower Trocadero area, it’s just too busy with people. Bir Hakeim Bridge, Eiffel Riverside and many other locations are lovely in the evening.
At this time, I’m recommending surprise proposals (especially at the Eiffel Tower Trocadero) between 8:00 am and 10:00 am. You’ll see this reflected in my calendar.
But your loved one isn’t a morning person? They’ll be suspicious in the morning? Perfect! Then I also offer the Classic (30 minute) surprise proposal in the evening (earlier in winter). This is perfect because you can tell your loved one that you’re going to a nice dinner, and then they’ll be dressed up for the dinner. We’ll capture your surprise proposal, and then indeed, you can go and have a fantastic dinner!
Night photos with Eiffel Tower lit
Please note, at this time I do not do night photography (total darkness). The lights come on the Eiffel Tower around 9:00 or 10:00 pm in summer and around 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm in winter. I suggest a late afternoon or evening proposal, followed by a delicious dinner where you can celebrate your engagement.
Planning your location
A lot of people really get worried about finding the perfect location. There really is not a BAD location in Paris.
The best locations for a Paris surprise proposal are listed under LOCATIONS. Based on my extensive experience with surprise proposals in Paris, these are the absolute best locations for not only the proposal, but the photography as well.
Listed there are the best times of day for each location, as well as a video so you can see the location.
Nervous? Anxious? Worried?
One of the most important moments in a couple’s life is the moment you decide to propose marriage. After all, you’re asking that person to spend the rest of their life with you! We women, and of course some men, dream about this moment our entire lives, how our loved one will propose to us. It’s a memory we want to have and cherish forever.
Many clients who I work with for surprise proposals are nervous, anxious and sometimes even worried. How will this moment play out? Will it be as perfect as they dreamed? Will my loved one suspect anything? From being in the surprise proposal business, I can tell you the following for sure:
- You’re going to Paris. Of course your loved one may think maybe you’ll pop the question, after all, Paris is the most romantic city in the world! Their friends may even say, I bet he’s going to propose to you in Paris! This is a pretty normal statement as everyone knows Paris is a city of love. However, even if your loved one may have it in their mind, they don’t know for sure, they don’t know where, and they don’t know when. So you have that going for you! Never has a person said, Oh I knew it! I knew that was happening! People are always surprised!
- A lot of my clients fret over the actual moment itself, they want it to be perfect. Of course we want it to be perfect. We can’t control life, Paris of course isn’t a movie set, it’s a city and a busy one at that. So we plan our proposal the best we can, and understand there are always a lot of tourists in Paris, traffic etc. But despite it all, we always, always have a memorable proposal! There has never been a time where a person who was proposed to said, Gee, that wasn’t as great as I thought it would be! Or, Wow, I just got engaged in Paris, I’m so disappointed! You just proposed to someone with a view of the Eiffel Tower, or on the hill of Montmartre, or by the Louvre Museum. They’re living the dream and you made that dream possible! How many people can say they became engaged in Paris? It’s very special!
- A lot of people also fret about the proposal itself. Remember, you’ll be on one knee for less than three minutes, maybe not even a minute. The important thing is the sentiment, the moment, and the love you feel for each other. Try not to fret about the details. I’ll be there to capture it in images you’ll look back on forever!
How to find me for the proposal
We agree on a time and place to meet. I always ask my clients if they can send a picture so that I know who I’m looking for.
I recommend taking a taxi or Uber to our meeting location. Traffic in Paris can be heavy, so please allow more than enough time to get to the location. If you’re going to the Eiffel Tower, allow 45-60 minutes for traffic.
I've looked at other photographers, and you seem pretty expensive?
They always say You get what you pay for, and in this case it really is true. You only get engaged in Paris once. You only have the opportunity to get down on one knee once and ask a question that your loved one will remember the rest of their lives. They’ll tell their friends about the moment, they’ll tell their families about it. It’s a big deal.
That’s why I provide a premium service. Sure, you can find a lot of cheaper photographers in Paris. No problem with that. But do you really want to leave your Paris surprise proposal to chance?
The benefits of working with me, and why I charge what I do:
- I’m a native speaker of American English, and I’m easy to understand. There are no communication issues to deal with.
- As an American, I also understand the concept of good customer service. This isn’t always easy to find in France. Good customer service means I’m professional, I’m reliable, I answer your questions, and I ensure that your Paris surprise proposal is a memorable event.
- When you become engaged, you’re super excited to tell everyone. Your professionally edited photos, ready to share, are ready in less than 24 HOURS. Other photographer will give you sneak peeks, but they won’t edit the photos in this amount of time. What this means is that in less than a day, your entire gallery, ready to print, ready to share, is open to you.
- I’m a great communicator and I’m here for you when others may not reply. How many times have you written to someone via email or Whatsapp, only to not receive a response? This produces so much anxiety. You’re in Paris to celebrate with the one you love, I remove this added stress by being there for you when you need me.
- I’m professional and I’m reliable. Believe or not, sometimes Paris surprise proposal photographers don’t show up! Or they cancel very last minute. I’ve had clients come to me after booking someone else in a panic, don’t let that happen to you!
What’s Paris like in the winter?
- A lot of people visit Paris in the winter, especially around the holidays. It’s a fantastic time to be in the city and to propose to your loved one! You can expect generally cold weather in the winter with high temperatures in the 40s, and lows around freezing. It rarely snows in Paris, but if it gets cold enough it can, but it’s rare . Most winter days are very cloudy, we don’t often see the sun in the winter. Also, there’s a very good change it will rain on your surprise proposal, so an umbrella is a great accessory. Most of our photography locations are outdoors without rain protection, however, there are a few places with rain protection, like the Viaduc near Bir Hakeim bridge, which provides some cover. If you’re coming in the winter, plan for rain and if it’s sunny you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
I’d like to propose in a Paris restaurant, hotel, hotel balcony, rooftop etc… can you help me?
Sometimes clients ask me to photograph in a restaurant, hotel, their hotel balcony (with a view of the Eiffel Tower) or even a rooftop. My services are focused on outdoor locations with the magnificent background of Paris at your feet. I do not offer surprise proposal photography in hotels, on hotel balconies, in restaurants, on rooftops, or in commercial establishments. But I’d be happy to recommend a wonderful outdoor location in Paris for your surprise proposal.
I'd like you to scatter rose petals. light candles...
Some clients have a vision of how they’d like your Paris surprise proposal to look. They love the thought of a surprise proposal with an Eiffel Tower view, for example, but they really would love to have some rose petals scattered, maybe some candles illuminated, perhaps a big sign, and so forth.
I believe that if you’re proposing in your home town, those romantic gestures might be necessary to make the scene more romantic. But personally, in Paris, I think it’s too much, which is why the surprise proposals I offer are really designed for clients who realize that Paris in itself is romantic and additional gestures aren’t really necessary.
I have a violinist option and champagne for toasting.
If you’d really like something more, like rose petals etc, please contact me and I’ll put you in touch with a Paris concierge who you’ll work with directly for those additions.
I’d like to be photographed with the Eiffel Tower lights come on, can you do that?
There’s something so beautiful about the Eiffel Tower when it’s lit, it’s so romantic.
However, it stays light out very late in Paris during the spring and summer. Surprise proposals with the Eiffel Tower lit are only available in the winter, when the lights of the Eiffel Tower come on around 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm.
You’ll see the options on the calendar when you book.
Do you work with same sex couples?
I’m here for you!
Consider me your friend in Paris, your Paris “connection”. I love my clients and it’s important to me to be courteous, polite, professional and create a really wonderful environment that you will always remember, as well as beautiful photographs to cherish. So, do not hesitate to reach out if I can help you in any way. I will also provide you access via Whatsapp if you wish so that we can plan your proposal!
